U.S. Representative, Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, was shot point blank during a public event in Tuscon.
Up to 11 others were wounded when an unidentified gunman fired shots indiscriminately at a Safeway grocery store. Giffords was airlifted to a hospital, suffering gun shot wounds to the head.
Rep. Giffords was hosting the first "Congress on your Corner," an event designed to allow her to personally meet members of the 8th Congressional District.
This comes two days after Giffords announced dispersing Homeland Security funding to the state's struggling fire departments. This is the 40-year-old democrat's fourth year in congress where she fought for issues such as health care issues, immigration reform, stem-cell research, alternative energy and a higher minimum wage.
More information still to come as the story progressed. Local press secretary says Giffords is in surgery, while law enforcement announced she had died.
